Student with gun on campus at Hillview Middle School

I am sorry for the late post:
I was contacted via email, phone, and letter home about a student with a gun at my sons school. Now I do appreciate that they did their due diligence on contacting me, I am now worried about my sons safety. There is no such thing as a fair fight anymore. If a kid has a gun, knife, or friends to help fight, their is no way of getting away from the situation besides running (and that doesn't always work).

My son doesn't get along with everyone, and he does walk away from fights but lets face it...I have talked to parents of the kids that pick on my son and I always tell my son to fight back, but in the end you never know if the advice you give is right. Times have changed and have gotten more violent.  My sons father and I have taught Collin about gun safety and have taken him to shooting ranges, but the guns are not accessible to him (minus his paintball and bee-bee gun). I am starting to wonder if he should carry a pocket knife around with him just in case... (as long as he was responsible with it). It was more of a fashion statement when I was younger but now it might be needed.

What would you tell your child to do if confronted by a gun or knife? What are your thoughts about teaching your child how to handle a weapon? What steps do you think the schools can take to ensure the safety of the children?

Lets really get into a discussion about this! This is one thing that needs to be addressed immediately!
